The Rundown: Ryan confronts his father and both he and Ellie might hold the key to finding a killer.
Pendleton has a walk and talk with Ryan after his tense meeting with his father and he tells the young man that they need his help tracking a killer who is murdering comic book writers. In exchange for talking to his father again, Ryan wants Ellie released. Something Pendleton has no problem with. When something Pendleton says jogs Ryan’s memory, he immediately needs to speak with his father again.
At the same time, Ellie is talking with Walker and Pilgrim about the same thing. Banter aside, Ellie brings up the fact that the creators being killed could be linked to the future of their creations and Pilgrim immediately puts out an APB on Bendis and Oeming. As Ryan learns that there might be a connection between the killer and his father, Walker and Pilgrim find another victim and an unusual murder weapon.
The Story: Cates crafts a consistently fun and entertaining tale that takes a playful jab at comic book story tropes and characters. The plot is consistently entertaining, interesting and engaging with a mystery that I am invested in seeing solved. I continue to love the world of this series and there are some great character moments throughout as well as a fun, if kind of brutal, ending to one of Cates friends in the business.
The Art: Shaw delivers some stellar visuals throughout the issue. Even the quiet moments are filled with beautiful details. I continue to be impressed with the visual Easter eggs found throughout every issue.
