The Rundown: The quest to return Ava to the dome will take an unexpected detour.
Ellie and Otto are preparing to take little Ava back to the dome and hopefully enter it so Ellie can find her missing parents. With Ava in disguise, they make their way to the highway, but a checkpoint might end their mission before its begun. At the same time, Ryan deals with being home with his abusive father who doesn’t believe that the boy was just let go from the feds. After taking a severe beating, Ryan leaves and hits the road.
When Ellie sees Ryan walking along the road, she leaves the car to confront him, but the intervention of a state trooper will end their confrontation early. With the police closing in, the appearance of a mega battle will distract them long enough for a comic book wizard to find the group and take them to a hidden lair where they might find answers. Unfortunately, they find more mysteries to be solved.
The Story: Donny Cates continues to craft an interesting and mid-bending tale in this series. This issue takes some weird and engaging turns as Cates continues to make the human stories as compelling as the bigger premise. I am impressed with the care and detail taken in making both Ellie and Ryan interesting individual characters with flaws, ambitions and things they need to overcome. Doing that makes the characters as interesting as the premise and keeps the reader connected to something other than the spectacle and the mystery.
The Art: Geoff Shaw continues to deliver some beautiful imagery throughout this issue. The characters look great, the action is fantastic and Shaw does a great job of building tension and emotion through the panels.
