The Rundown: An unprecedented event shakes the very fabric of the world and that’s just the beginning.
In the beginning of 2017, an unknown and devastating event took place in the city of Denver, Colorado. Without warning, the skies opened up and an entire comic book world appeared in the real world causing untold devastation across the city. The event closes off the state of Colorado from the rest of the country and no one is allowed in or out as the comic book characters seemingly continue their fight.
Ellipses “Ellie” Howell still loves the comic books these characters come from even in a world where there are active protests against everything having to do with superheroes and comics. She works in the last comic book shop in Utah and an unexpected visitor will change her world forever.
The Story: The concept of this story is big, bold and interesting on its face. Donny Cates manages to make it interesting from a character level as well. Instead of going all in at the beginning of the story, Cates crafts and cultivates the world of this story and its characters in a way that keeps the reader interested in both the bigger event and the people it is effecting. Ellie is an interesting character and her journey is one that keeps me engaged. I can’t wait to see where this story goes next and Cates leaves the reader with a big tease in its cliffhanger ending.
The Art: Geoff Shaw delivers some beautiful art in this first issue. The characters look great. The action looks amazing as well. What I really loved is the contrast in how the “real” characters look in relation to the “comic book” characters. It was charming, practical and smart.
