The Rundown: This is the story of Private Investigator Dan Farraday and a case he got too close to. Like many private eyes, he is being paid by a very powerful man to do something the rich man doesn’t want to dirty his hands with. In this case, it’s finding the missing man’s mistress.
In the course of his investigation, Farraday learns things about the missing woman who not only give him insight into who she is as a person, but also impresses him. When he finally catches up to her, he decides to let her in on a secret he’s been keeping since his time in the war. A secret that gives him insight into who she is and why he seems drawn to her. A secret that leads him into an ambush that puts vengeance on his mind.
The Story: Ed Brubaker has crafted a brilliantly layered noir world for these characters to operate in and every one of them feels familiar, but interesting at the same time. I love how he incorporates characters from other stories into each other, creating a rich and intriguing world that engages the reader.
The Art: Sean Phillips delivers stunning art in this issue. The characters are detailed beautifully and the panels perfectly match the gritty, film noir style of the story.
