Frank Castle has had a long, storied and controversial career as both a hero and anti-hero and for anyone who wasn’t aware of his history past his war on crime, his time as both a Ghost Rider, Herald of Galactus and servant of the mad Titan Thanos. All of this is laid out in the first few pages including his death at the hands of Silver Surfer wielding Mjolnir.

Who knows what part of his past attracted the attention of Odin, but after his death, he finds himself in Valhalla as an apparent reward. Something that doesn’t sit right with Castle and he makes his disapproval known to the All-Father in a way only Frank can. It’s pretty much the way someone would expect Castle to react to things and Burnett does a great job of rendering the action, motion and brutality of the fight. It was actually really fun to watch the events unfold in this issue.

Cates does a great job of keeping the character of Frank Castle grounded and consistent and the humor in this first issue works well. I found myself chuckling a few times at how exasperated Odin is with Frank and his decision to let Frank leave opens the possibility of some interesting and huge stories, especially when Frank decides to get some revenge on the man he blames for his current predicament.

This first issue was fun and action driven. the best thing about it is that amidst all the action and anger, there is some character development that is fun to see revealed. There are multiple places that this story can go moving forward and with the momentum this first issue moves at, those places are going to be wild.
