Chris Evans may have hung up his shield, but the Captain America star has signed on to a new project from Winter Soldier and Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
According to Deadline, Evans and Ryan Gosling will star in Netflix’s biggest budget film to date The Gray Man and is slated to begin a new franchise for the streaming service. The Russo Brothers have been quietly developing the film for years after it stalled for years with Brad Pitt attached.
The Gray Man is based on a series of novels from Mark Greaney. The Gray Man is a former CIA operative and freelance assassin named Court Gentry (Gosling). The action thriller will be a globetrotting duel between Gosling’s Gentry and Evans as Lloyd Hansen, a former cohort of Gentry’s at the CIA.
Anthony Russo released a statement regarding the story saying; “For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”
His brother Joe Russo released a statement as well saying; “The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical, and the ability to do with with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie. These are master assassins, and Gosling’s characters gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down.”
The Russo Brothers recently completed filming Cherry with Tom Holland and are currently working on a live action Hercules adaptation for Disney. Both the Russo Brothers and Netflix hope to begin production on The Gray Man either late fall or early spring.
