The Rundown: Catwoman deals with the aftermath of Father Valley’s activities. Alleytown gains new heroes.
Selina Kyle discusses a recent deadly escapade with a GCPD Detective. Afterwards, she and Leo have a deep conversation that is soon interrupted by stunning news. Next, Catwoman goes off in search of a friend. When she is confronted by an enforcement agency, Catwoman is suddenly aided by an ally. Later, she learns of a surprising plot.
Meanwhile, a group of former villains make an alliance to protect their home. Elsewhere, Penguin and the Riddler make bold plans.
The Story: Catwoman’s Fear State run formally begins with this entry into the saga. Once again, Ram V has crafted an intriguing chapter that speaks directly to societal issues in current society. In a haunting narration, he uses a poignant character to describe a Gotham city in chaos. The use of fear is described as a means of oppression and a catalyst for apathy. And it becomes frighteningly clear that this described Fear State is actually the world as we know it. Especially if you are a part of a certain class or ethnicity.
I found this episode to be an interesting take on what it means to desire freedom and how the least likely of individuals can make the biggest impact. As more players enter the game, the stakes in Alleytown are increased. I am excited to see how this story line will play out.
The Art: This issue uses traditional artwork highlighted by a range of muted colors. The result is a highly expressive series of illustrations with a distinct noir tone. I feel the dark mood of the story is perfectly captured by the artwork provided.
