The Rundown: Catwoman has an encounter with her previous romantic partner. Later, she faces off against a formidable enemy.
Catwoman and an old friend reconnect. She then learns the events leading up to her previous rescue. Later, she confronts Father Valley and the two have a formidable showdown. Elsewhere, Detective Hadley searches for information on Father Valley. When his investigation crosses paths with another event, something unexpected occurs.
The Story: Ram V expertly crafts an engrossing first chapter to the newest volume in this series. The choice to begin the issue by resolving a minor mystery from the previous arc was brilliantly executed and provided a compelling setup for future events. Selena’s relationship with several people are explored, and the emotional intensity is ramped up. I was struck by how personal this issue felt, and how wrapped up I became in the tale. It felt as though I were watching a movie, to the point where I had an audible reaction to the ending scenes. I’m excited for the future of this arc, and can’t wait to see how Fear State will be incorporated into it.
The Art: This issue uses a traditional illustration style enhanced by muted color work. And the tone of the story is perfectly captured. The action scenes are well done and interesting. I found the attention to detail and character emotionally engaging and interesting.
