The shadow conspiracy against Steve Rogers continues its work and its aims are bigger than the destruction of a man.
Aleksander Lukin has returned and he is not alone. A realization his wife Alexa comes to when she goes to her mentor, Rasputin, for help in resurrecting him.
Unfortunately, Alexa has more on her mind than just bringing back her dead husband and she explains her motivations for continuing their work as Lukin struggles with his memories and the world he finds himself in. Alexa has been gathering her forces in secret as the heroes of Earth have raged and fought each other.
When the emergence of Steve Rogers as the leader of HYDRA begins, Alexa sees the moment as the perfect opportunity to begin a plan that will not only destroy Steve Rogers the man, but Captain America the idea.
Coates has done a great job of balancing the growing strife in the real world with the fictional conflicts playing out in the comics. The fallout of Secret Empire continues and the vacuum left by the fall of HYDRA is creative soil for Coates to till. I also really liked the relationship between Alexa and Alec. Even though they are the bad guys, there is a genuine sense that they care for each other. Also the way the conversation plays out in parallel to the events that affect Steve at the end of the issue is a nice touch.
Leinil Francis Yu’s art is amazing. There are some really great character moments and expressions that help to elevate the story with visual tension.
