The Rundown: After a perilous assignment, B and a colleague seek out a rendezvous point.
The story opens with B hooked up to monitors as the subject of an experiment. Then the scene shifts. In the Ukraine, an extradition mission goes awry. When B and his teammate are stranded in a forest, B refuses opts for an unusual escape route. He discusses his past and his motivations with Jim during their journey. Soon they are rescued. Elsewhere, two scientists discuss B’s latest adventure and discuss a future project named Protocol X.
The Story: This chapter focuses on B’s humanity. Reeves and Kindt do an excellent job of portraying the conflicting emotions of a man caught between life and death. There is literally nothing new under the sun for B, and all appears as futile. I am interested in finding out what happens in the scientists’ new experiment, and whether or not B will finally find peace.
The Art: The artwork in this issue is well done and inspiring. It is crafted in a traditional drawing style and the colorwork is reminiscent of newsprint. As is the norm for this series, this edition heavily features intense, and often gory, action scenes. However, these panels are a perfect fit for the tone of this tale and add an extra layer of emotional involvement with the characters. I found myself completely transported.
