The Rundown: Three friends attempt to reclaim stolen heritage will lead to a larger purpose.
Timi, Sango and Gbonka grew up as friends in Nigeria under the eye of Timi’s acclaimed artist father. After they drift apart and Timi’s father dies, the cultural and respected art he created is given to the British Museum and Timi is brought to the city as an honored guest to tempt him. At the same time, Gbonka and Sango try to reclaim the art for Nigeria and are rebuked.
As the three friends reunite and old wounds are opened among them, they come together long enough to craft a plot to liberate the art. After a tense escape, the three discover a list of more items of cultural significance located around the world. Items that will prompt them to work together to liberate them as well.
The Story: Shobo & Shof craft an entertaining and often thrilling story in this first issue. There are some wonderful messages about cultural theft and exploitation in the story as well as great drama between the three main characters. The story sets up some interesting and compelling situations for them and I look forward to seeing how these stories play out as the plot progresses.
The Art: Tefenkgi crafts some beautiful art in the issue. The visuals are thrilling and engaging as the characters and environments drew me in as a reader.
