The Rundown: Briar Rose and company meet resistance looking for help so seek a different, more dangerous kind.
After learning the legend of a knight who used magic to defend his city at the cost of his life, Briar decides to travel to the city to seek aid. Unfortunately, her presence only causes the city guards to mock her and her friends. Thinking they might have a plan to enter the city, they go looking for a local gnome village that has the ingredients they need for a spell.
Briar discovers quickly that her idea of gnomes is wildly wrong and the surly creatures proceed to mock the company until Grendrid’s forces arrive to take them all.
The Story: A wild, unique and extremely funny ride. Cantwell holds back on the tension of the last issue and infuses this one with a lot of humor. The scenes at the castle gates were funny and the visit to the gnome village is even funnier. The language is raunchy and I love how the story takes some interesting turns right up to the surprising and unexpected finale.
The Art: Garcia delivers some beautifully detailed art on every page. I love the visual contrast between Briar’s fairy tale visions of the world and the grim realities that she ends up experiencing.
