The Rundown: In the aftermath of Tim’s run in with Titania, Ellie is still trapped within the book and unable to tell how long she’s been gone.
In the real world, the police continue to investigate the girl’s disappearance and they want to know what Tim has to do with it. Unfortunately, they get few answers from his father, who seems to be lost in his own world.
Still trapped in the book with words as the bars of her cell, Ellie remembers back when she loved the idea of magic and wanted to be a part of that world. Her memories and determination provoke an unexpected ally to emerge within the pages with a story of his own. A story that could possibly help the two of them escape from the book and its keeper, the Book Binder.
The Story: Kat Howard turns away from the drama of Tim’s story and focuses on Ellie in this issue. It’s a bold move that serves the story well as both the reader and Tim are given a break to process what he learned from Titania and the story can shift and allow Ellie to become a more realized and interesting character. Howard takes Ellie out of the damsel in distress trope and gives her agency in this issue. Both her story and the one of her new friend are compelling in their own ways. It’s going to be interesting to see how their stories intersect with Tim’s journey going forward.
The Art: Tom Fowler’s art is magnificent. All of the characters pop on the page and there is an otherworldly style to it that gives the action an emotional impact.
