Marvel fans around the world flocked to the theater to see Ryan Coogler’s take on the Marvel hero Black Panther earlier this year and the film brought in over $1 billion dollars globally. But while we’ve been enjoying the character in Avengers Infinity War, cosplaying at cons and prepping for Halloween, the movie broke another record domestically.
Six months after its initial release in theaters, Black Panther has become the third highest-grossing film in history with over $700 million dollars domestically behind Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.7M) and 20th Century Fox’s Avatar ($760.5 million), not accounting for inflation. It also sits as the ninth highest-grossing film of all time internationally.
According to reports, Disney changed the stateside theater count to allow the film to continue playing without having to so a re-release of the film to hit the milestone.
With no news currently of a sequel to the film, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has assured fans that a sequel will happen and that they want Ryan Coogler to make it.
