Netflix’s new Black Mirror film Bandersnatch is an ambitious, interactive experience that took a lot of work to bring to the screen.
Set in the 1980s, Bandersnatch introduces us to Stefan, a young programmer who has hopes of creating a best-selling, text-based computer game inspired by a ‘choose your own adventure’-style novel given to him as a child. You alone are in charge of what happens next. The journeys you go on are a direct result of your decisions.
There are choices to be made, challenges to overcome, dangers to encounter and, as always in life (and Black Mirror), consequences to be had. Choosing wisely could lead to triumph while taking the wrong path could end in disaster — but who’s to say what’s “right” and “wrong,” anyway? And fret not because once one experience comes to a close, you can — and should! — go back and make a new choice, alter the path of your story and maybe even change its outcome.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch took 35 days to film and the interactive experience features 1,000,000,000,000+* unique permutations to tell its story. According to Netflix; “There are 5 main endings with multiple variants of each…we’re leaving a little mystery here and looking forward to the fans uncovering all of them!”
Bandersnatch stars Fionn Whitehead (Stefan), Will Poulter (Colin), Craig Parkinson (Peter), Alice Lowe (Dr. Haynes) and Asim Chaudhry (Tucker). It’s executive produced and written by Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker and directed by David Slade.
