The Rundown: Lucy has lost everything and her loss forces her to seek out answers.
In the aftermath of her personal tragedy, Lucy is angry and confused. Not knowing what else to do, she picks up the hammer and heads out into the city. At the same time, she thinks of her past and the event that made her hang up the hammer in the first place. An event that made her do things she didn’t think a hero would ever do and go to her mother seeking absolution. Back in the present, she heads to the center of the phenomenon looking for the source of the signal that’s calling her.
Black Hammer makes her way to the other Spiral City and runs into a familiar face. One she wants answers from. After losing everything and everyone that she loved, Lucy is not in the mood to talk, but Skulldigger tells her about how he rescued her daughter and why he called her to the other Spiral. Unfortunately, the return of some familiar faces will make answering more questions difficult.
The Story: Lemire does a great job of bringing the reader along Lucy’s journey of pain and purpose. You feel for her as she deals with both the aftermath of her own actions and the loss of everything she held dear. What makes the story more compelling is the reader’s curiosity to know how both of those things are linked. I enjoy the rich world of this story and the twists and turns throughout the plot.
The Art: Ward and Sheean do amazing work with the art in the issue. The characters are expressive and visually interesting. There are some great panels throughout and the two cities on top of each other is thrilling to see.
