Welcome to the most intense jamboree you’ve ever seen and someone might not make it out alive.
The badge teams have been dropped into different parts of the island and given the task of surviving and beating the other teams to a dormant volcano. Each team is tested based on their skills and their fears giving the reader the opportunity to see how these teams interact with each other.
Frankly, it’s a little brutal given that these are kids. The Lord of the Flies and Hunger Games comparisons made by the kids are wholly appropriate.
As the Black Badge teams makes their way out of the desert area and closer to the jungle, they run into the surveillance team and a fight takes place over the dwindling amount of supplied they have. We also learn more about Kenny’s back story, especially what happened to his father and why it makes Kenny over-prepare for missions. The danger in this mission only increases as the Black Badge’s make their way to the tree line and we realize that they are not alone.
The story is getting more exciting as the stakes are being raised and secrets finally revealed. Kindt continues to do a great job of steering this story into interesting territory through a compelling narrative and engaging characters. It continues to build on the Jimmy story, adding a layer of paranoia to the issue.
Jenkins really delivers with the art. There are several great moments in the story that benefit from Jenkins’ style.
