Warner Brothers Birds of Prey film has recently cast two of its three heroines in Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Black Canary. Now there is word that another member of the main cast has been revealed.
According to an exclusive report in The Wrap, actress Rosie Perez has been cast in the role of Gotham City Detective Renee Montoya in the new film. Perez is known for her roles in films like Do The Right Thing, White Men Can’t Jump and her Academy Award nominated role in Fearless.
Renee Montoya is a Detective with the Major Crimes unit in Gotham City. She was originally created for Batman: The Animated Series by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and Mitch Brian. Montoya made her first appearance in comics with issue #475 of Batman in March 1992 and was frequently partnered with Detective Harvey Bullock. Montoya has had her own history as a costumed vigilante when she took on the mantle of The Question from Vic Sage.
Birds of Prey is written by Christina Hodson, who is also writing the Batgirl screenplay for Warner Brothers. It is expected to begin production in January 2019 with a release date of February 7, 2020. The film will be directed by Cathy Yan.
