The Rundown: The Berserker and his new companion enjoy some quiet time out in the woods and come to an understanding through their shared pain.
After securing some drinks and food, Berserker and his new companion make their way back to their camp and proceed to drink. The homeless man does the bulk of the talking while the Berserker remembers his lost family and the reputation he cultivated in his world.
When he takes some time to be alone, he is riled from his thoughts by an attack on his new friend. An attack that will serve as the tip of the iceberg as a portal opens up and all hell breaks loose.
The Story: Jeff Lemire manages to infuse this story with great moments of action, pathos and heart. There is a complexity to both characters that is brought out in a single moment of understanding. A moment that Lemire crafts for the reader to empathize with these two characters and see how they are connected.
The Art: Mike Deodato Jr has some beautiful art in this issue. One of the best moments is the interlude with the Berserker recounting his life of adventure and the family he’s lost. Powerful visuals throughout.
