In a box office dominated by superhero epics and action movies filled with battle scenes, there is a movie coming that looks at a real life war fought over some very real technology.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) stars in the upcoming film The Current War based on the real life battle between the giants of invention and business Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) and his rival George Westinghouse in their battle for dominance in the discovery and usage of electric current. Michael Shannon (Man of Steel) plays Westinghouse, who has decided to get into the electricity business because Edison’s invention and partnership with JP Morgan threatens Westinghouse’s heating oil empire.
As the two men clash over their competing businesses, Westinghouse enlists scientific luminary Nikola Tesla, played by Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) who has found a flaw in Edison’s direct current design. The Current War also stars Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant).
The Current War comes to select theaters in time for awards season November 24, 2017.
