HBO has given a series order to a new supernatural thriller from writer Stephen King and starring Ben Mendelsohn (Ready Player One, Captain Marvel).
The Outsider, based on the novel by Stephen King, will be Mendelsohn’s return to television. The series will be written and executive produced by Richard Price (The Night Of). Jack Bender (Mr. Mercedes) will also executive produce along with actor Jason Bateman (Ozark, Arrested Development). Bateman will also come on to direct the first two episodes and there are rumors that he might be taking the co-lead in the series.
The ten episode limited series revolves around the brutal murder of an eleven year old boy and all of the evidence pointing to popular teacher and little league coach Terry Maitland. As the investigation continues and Maitland pleads his innocence in a town quickly turning against him and his family, the investigator discovers a supernatural aspect to the case and the emergence of a real monster on the hunt.
Mendelsohn is set to take on the role of Maitland. No other casting news has been released.
