The Rundown: Batman and Bigby have a final battle against Bookworm and the force behind him.
Bookworm is in the middle of a ceremony that is calling forth unknown and dark powers with Batman and Bigby waiting to spring into action. Unaware of what exactly they’re facing, the pair burst in and find themselves facing off against a monster from literature. One that is extremely powerful. At the same time, the Robin’s round up the rest of Bookworm’s crew.
In the aftermath of a harsh and vicious battle, Batman and Bigby barely escape and a rotting Bookworm gets away only to be found by a familiar face. One who has something to return to Bigby.
The Story: Willingham brings this story to an ending that could have been satisfying if it took its time to concentrate on its characters. The issue felt rushed from one moment to the next and none of them were particularly satisfying either in their premise or their execution. As a Fables fan, I loved the reveal of the power behind the scheme, but I also wanted more of that story to be told. There were a lot of interesting moments in the reveal that could have made it more engaging, but that didn’t happen. Batman’s presence felt like a waste and nothing he did really had an impact on the plot itself.
The Art: Level delivered some great visuals to the issue. The art stood out as fun and lively.
