The Rundown: Bruce Wayne’s journey to becoming a hero brings him into more conflict with his mentor and his mission.
In the snow covered mountains of North Korea, Bruce Wayne makes the dangerous trek up to a secret monastery. There, he is attacked by a series of students and manages to stay alive long enough to be welcomed inside to begin his training with the master known as Kirigi. As he begins his training, he meets another young man on a personal mission of his own.
As their training progresses, Bruce witnesses a new group of students have entered the temple. Ones that did not have to go through the initiation he endured. When he learns the truth about these new students and what Kirigi’s final lesson is, Bruce decides that his training is over and attempts to move on. Unfortunately, the new students have different plans and Bruce and his new friend discover they might not make it down the mountain alive.
The Story: Zdarsky crafts a wonderful, character-driven story in this issue. The story does a brilliant job of showing the evolution of the character and doesn’t hold the reader’s hand while the story goes to some dark places that force Bruce to choose his path. The self-contained elements of the story work really well to flesh out Bruce and his mission while challenging it at every turn.
The Art: Carmine Di Giandomenico delivers some beautiful art throughout the story. From the weather elements to the brutally of the fights, there is a wonderful, tangible element to the art that captures the emotion of the scenes.
