The Rundown: A ghost from Batman’s past comes back to seize power in Gotham City.
A body with connections to some of the most powerful and influential people in Gotham washes ashore and Batman comes in to assist Gordon in investigating who wanted the man killed. Coincidentally, the former mayor of Gotham has decided to resurface and make a comeback in the with a televised interview. Batman and his team watch from the cave and Bruce has a sneaky suspicion that the former Mayor’s resurgence in the public eye is linked to the death of a man who knew the secrets of the rich and powerful.
Batman tells them of how his first forays into the night life of Gotham put him on the Mayor’s radar. Using Batman as an excuse, Mayor Mayfield sends creates and sends out a task force designed to stop crime and Batman himself. A task force filled with police rejects and former Arkham residents. Batman also reveals that his impetuousness led him to make a deal to remove the Mayor. A deal that’s been broken and Batman wants to know why.
The Story: Burnett and Dini build an interesting mystery in this issue. Showcasing Batman’s first forays and mistakes in Gotham shows an evolution of the character that makes the threat he now faces compelling. The plot is brilliantly paced and the dialogue is engaging. I really enjoyed the story and what it’s setting up for Batman and his allies to face. I cannot wait to see where the story goes next.
The Art: Burchett delivers some fantastic art that is fast paced, beautifully detailed and fun.
