The Rundown: Batman and Superman don’t know who to trust as they hunt for the Secret Six.
The Batman Who Laughs has infected six people with connections to The Dark Knight and it’s up to him and the Man of Steel to find them and discover what The Batman Who Laughs has planned for them.
When Gordon calls Batman with a new case involving a missing boy, he and Superman have to go back to where it all started for Bruce.
When they arrive at Crime Alley, the pair find the Batman Who Laughs version of the Batcave. As they investigate the villains plan and how it will cast doubt on their ability to trust the people around them, Bruce is attacked by one of the BWL’s Robins. Unfortunately for both Batman and Superman, this Robin is carrying a potentially deadly and powerful secret.
The Story: A lot has been teased about the scope and scale of this story and Joshua Williamson nails the first issue in both tone and plot. Williamson does some impressive storytelling with the dialogue and one of the best parts of this first issue is the juxtaposition between the narrative voices of Batman and Superman, especially how they feel and what they think about each other. What also works are the small moments where the audience is one step ahead of the characters and how those moments add more tension to the plot.
The Art: David Marquez’s art is fantastic. Everything works visually and the art perfectly complements the tone and style of this story.
