The Rundown: The evolution and transformation of Miracle Molly is revealed.
Miracle Molly leads a group from the Unsanity Collective on a raid of a rich family in Gotham. After telling them what they want, one of them recognizes Molly and the journey to her past begins. She recalls her time with the man she’s currently robbing and how her life as an employee of Helios Robotics consisted of being constantly berated along with her ideas being passed over. The only thing that seems to bring her genuine joy are the messages from the mysterious Master Wyze that she listens to alone.
As her world continues to be a never ending nightmare of banality and repetition, her husband’s family throws another wrinkle into it. When she tries to stan up for herself and change her circumstances at work, she discovers the dark truth behind her existence and how she fits within the system. When she attempts to take control of her work, tragedy strikes and Mary sets out on her path to becoming Miracle Molly.
The Story: James Tynion IV does a great job of fleshing out one of the more interesting characters introduced in the Batman series. While the story is really interesting and told in an interesting way, I would enjoy the mystery a little more. While the character of Miracle Molly is interesting now, her origin is banal. Her entire life is a cacophony of first world problems mixed with privilege that make it hard to relate to her. It’s tragic that her story is so boring because her character is so compelling.
The Art: Dani does great work with the art in the issue. There are hints at Tim Sale’s style in the art and that works perfectly for a Gotham story because the city looks amazing and the contrast between the rich areas of the city and the poor areas are visually stunning.
