The Rundown: The Riddler concocts the ultimate game against the Dark Knight.
A man on his way home to his family is murdered in broad daylight by the Riddler who stays and waits for the police. After being arrested, the only demand that he has is that he gets to speak to Batman. Unfortunately, the Dark Knight is investigating the motive for the killing. An investigation that will bring the Batman and the reader into the dark past of Edward Nygma.
As Batman continues to put the pieces together, Riddler increases both the violence and danger to those around him as he waits for the Batman to come to him. A meeting that will reveal long held secrets and set up a dangerous journey for both men that will lead to darkness.
The Story: King brings the reader into an intense, dark and intellectually thrilling new story with this one shot. The plot is beautifully layered and filled with great dialogue, character development and danger. King brings a level of tension to the story that is riveting and that tension culminates in a conclusion that is a brilliantly dark, slow burn leading to a final reveal that is awesome for the character.
The Art: Mitch Gerads brilliantly captures the dark intensity of the story with the art. The style beautifully lends itself to the gritty, film noir detective vibe of the story and that final page is both intense and visually thrilling.
