The Rundown: Batman and Black Lightning need to learn more about Ras Al Ghul’s new weapon and Shiva has her own plan for the Outsiders.
After their initial encounter with Ras and seeing him use a devastating alien weapon, Batman does the unthinkable; he stands down the team. Not knowing what their next move is, Jefferson confronts the Dark Knight and discovers that Bruce has brought in some help to learn more about the alien device. Help in the form of Martian Manhunter. After learning about the device itself, Batman tells Lightning about his link to its energy and that enhancing Jefferson’s strength might be the key to stopping Ras.
At the same time, with Ras gearing up to use the device again, Shiva confronts Katana about her plans for Signal and Orphan. Shiva takes the young heroes under her wing and gives them a choice about whether to wait for Batman or to reject the Outsiders and take the fight to Ras Al Ghul personally.
The Story: Hill does an awesome job of showing the dual philosophies at work in this team. The dialogue showcases the consequences of Batman keeping everything close to the vest and that his keeping secrets are not going to work with this team. There are some great moments throughout the story and the divisions and cracks in the team make for some palpable dramatic tension. It will be interesting to see how this team and this story evolves.
The Art: Melnikov offers some great visuals throughout this issue. The style is impressive and has a beautiful, animated quality to it. The backgrounds are gorgeously detailed and there are some impressive panels throughout.
