Batman and the Outsiders #1
DC Comics
Written by Bryan Hill
Art by Dexter Soy
Colors by Veronica Gandini
Letters by Clayton Cowles
A young woman and her father are attacked in the night and after the father is killed, the killer targets the woman in order to unlock her metahuman powers.
In Gotham, the new Outsiders are on a training mission to take down Saint John and the rifts in the team become apparent at every turn, including the resentment of Signal against having to take orders from anyone other than Batman. After taking down the threat, Black Lightning asserts his authority with the young hero and gets him to stand down. Jefferson takes his concerns to Bruce and the two of them have a back and forth about who’s team the Outsiders really are.
Later that night, Batman calls the Outsiders together to investigate the missing metahuman girl after he reveals a connection to her and her dead father. He tasks the Outsiders to find the girl and show her that she isn’t alone. The team needs to make a decision and find her quick because they are not the only ones looking for her.
This is a good first issue and I enjoy and appreciate the fact that the emotional issues that have part of these characters continues in this story as things they have to work through. Hill has consistently been solid in his writing for these characters and Jefferson’s distrust of Bruce continues to be an interesting thread that should be explored. What I hope from this book is that Lightning takes command of this team and its agenda. The worst thing that could happen to the character and the team is for them to simply exist as an extension of Batman’s agenda with these heroes serving as errand boys for the Dark Knight. I don’t see that happening under Hill’s watch, but it is a concern.
Dexter Soy’s art is amazing. There are some great action panels throughout the issue filled with detail and the art style has a sense of motion and action even in the quiet moments.
