The Rundown: Bane and Thomas Wayne have done the unthinkable and Bruce’s discovery might break him in a way Bane never could.

After the confrontation with both Bane and his father, Bruce wakes up in the manor seated across from a body. At the same time, a recording made just for Bruce plays to remind the man of the boy he was and the man he became.

When he discovers who that body is, the hero feels every emotion he can muster from anger to grief to pain. His determination to find the man responsible will fuel his actions and the final confrontation between the two promises to be the battle of Batman’s life.

The Story: So Tom King goes straight for the emotional gut punch in this issue. He takes the narrative to the darkest of places for the Dark Knight and the reader is shown the depth of the relationship between these two characters. The lack of dialogue is perfect. There is nothing that could have been said that would equal the emotional impact of what Alfred is saying to Bruce in the recording that plays during this issue. There is a tenderness to those words that, coupled with the moment itself, allows the reader to feel what Bruce is and match their rage to his own. I cannot wait to see where this confrontation leads and whether or not it will see the end for Thomas Wayne.

The Art: Janin’s art is dark, haunting and filled with emotion. You can see the rage, anguish, pain and determination on Bruce’s face and Janin is able to make the masked man expressive in ways I haven’t seen from other artists.
