The saga of “Master Bruce” continues in this new issue.
Returning to a previous story, young Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents. As the investigation into their death begins, Batman begins a series of investigations to find the murderer. He even visits Bruce to get details from the boy about that night.
His investigation takes him from the bottom to the top of the criminal underworld and a confrontation with the killer himself as he brings him to justice. Unfortunately, that’s never the end of the story. As the parallels begin to mount up, young Master Bruce is brought in to see the man who killed his parents. That’s when reality returns and we’re left with young Matthew and his murderous delusion.
This was an interesting interlude from the main story that we’ve been following and the end would seem to connect Matthew and his persona “Master Bruce” to the events affecting Arkham. It will be interesting to see how King lines those things up and what impact putting a sociopath who thinks he’s Bruce Wayne hunting his parents killer will have on the population of Arkham and especially, on Bane.
This is a story that should impact Batman more and it’s interesting that King keeps Batman out of it mostly. It allows the focus to be on Matthew’s descent as it shows the reader the fine line Bruce walks between his grief and his mission.
Travis Moore’s art is amazing. Every character interaction is filled with expressive faces filled with emotion. There’s a humanizing quality to those panels and they do a great job of conveying the tone of the story.
