The Rundown: The mystery of Amadeus Arkham is finally solved, and Dr. Joy makes a dramatic choice.
The recent appearances of Amadeus Arkham are discussed, and a secret identity is revealed. As Dr. Phosphorous and Nocturna talk with Dr. Joy they are soon joined by someone unexpected, and an altercation occurs. Afterwards, the trio arrive at a hospital with their former foe. Once there they interrupt a deadly situation and Dr. Joy has a dramatic change of heart. Finally, she and her companions make an unexpected decision that may change their lives forever.
The Story: Dan Watters creates a beautifully eerie penultimate chapter in this series. The narrative language is well done as it presents the twisted path laid out for the former residents of Arkham Asylum. It clearly shows how one’s frame of mind can inform one’s actions. As Dr. Joy comes to terms with her current state, I found myself feeling both empathetic and horrified. Her bond with her patients and desire to make sense of her experiences has now brought her to chaotic and deadly space and I am excited for the final resolution.
The Art: This issue features a gothic style that leans heavily on traditional drawings. The attention to detail in both expression and form help to create a dark and sinister tone that conveys the disturbing ideas and deeds presented in the tale. Each page is eye-catching and transportive.
