The Rundown: An accomplished soldier finds himself betrayed when the war he fights in becomes complicated.
Captain Kai finds himself in another warzone on another planet that is rebelling against having their planet taken over for its resources. As they get overwhelmed, they call in a dangerous asset to bring the battle to a close and Kai continues to question their mission and whether or not peace is an option.
When Kai is informed that he is going on another mission immediately, he gets a secret message. A message that informs him that something has changed. Something that will make him the target of betrayal and eventually becoming something that his former colleagues have been doing to their victims.
The Story: Snyder, Tieri and Hardy craft an intriguing, thrilling and entertaining story in this first issue. I love how this story builds on both thrills and suspense. It establishes some great drama both personal and political and the character of Kai goes through a compelling journey of self discovery. I really enjoyed the buildup of tension throughout the story and how the writers play with that tension before delivering a knockout blow of a cliffhanger that makes me excited to see what happens next.
The Art: Smallman delivers some beautiful art throughout the issue with visuals that are brutally detailed and exciting.
