Suspicion and desperation increase the threat to Richard’s mission.

Richard tries to find a way to get close to Wynn as the party at the millionaires mansion rages on. Jenny leaves him to the mob as she goes to speak with her father who is dealing with a growing dissension in the ranks. A dissension that is clashing with Morgan’s plans to evolve the movement.

Richard has his own problems to deal with after he humiliates one of Wynn’s thugs and Jenny gives him a lesson on who he is dealing with. After she brings him to her father, Morgan gives Richard an unexpected book to read with an even more unexpected reason. When he emerges the next day to speak to Sheila, his handler has a reaction that forces her back to the hospital. With everything Richard is involved with going south in multiple directions, his clandestine meeting with the guy he humiliated culminates in Richard being put into a position where he will have to cross the line.

This is an incredibly tense issue. Bryan Hill does an excellent job of crafting these characters to be multi-faceted and unpredictable. That makes the drama and circumstances more powerful when moments happen that you weren’t expecting. Even the worst of these people are still portrayed as people and the fact that they are given their humanity in the midst of their horrible acts and beliefs makes the story compelling.

Leonardo Fernandez’s stark and beautiful art complements this story incredibly well. There are so many great visual elements at work in this issue, especially the use of shadow to denote the tone of a scene.
