The Rundown: America is forced to assist Catalina in an unusual scheme.
The chapter begins with a flashback of America’s childhood. In the present, Catalina has taken Roberto prisoner. When America confronts her, Catalina discloses her history in captivity. She then forces America to use her powers. However, a tragedy soon occurs. Afterwards, America frees Roberto and the Starlings. In the end, America reconciles with her foster family and make plans for a new beginning.
The Story: Vazquez crafts a compelling and action packed ending to this adventure series. I was heartbroken by Catalina’s backstory. And I completely understand her motivations. I always appreciate it when a story makes me see the perspective of both the hero and villain. I am also glad that America was able to learn and grow from her experience. I really enjoyed reading about America Chavez. And I hope to see more stories involving her soon.
The Art: The illustrations in this issue are in a modern, youthful styling. The bold color work shifts from bright to dark depending on the mood and time period of the scene. And the emphasis on character expression and form intensifies the reader’s connection to the characters. I found this good looking edition to be very engaging.
