The Rundown: America Chavez visits family for the first time in several years. Later, she confronts a mysterious stranger.
After a surprising attack in Washington Heights, America checks in on her adopted family. She is then confronted with the realities surrounding her long absence. While she and her uncle check his bodega for damages, she makes a surprising discovery. America then goes in search of the neighborhood’s assailant. Once the two encounter each other, her new enemy does something unexpected.
The Story: I really like how this story blends scenes from the past with present day activities. Vazquez’s use of flashbacks gives the reader a clear sense of why America interacts with her family the way she does. Her story divides me emotionally as I understand the perspective from both sides. America’s struggle with honoring her birth parents and pleasing her adopted ones is tough, and I am invested in the way she handles this going forward. Also, as the mystery surrounding her new foe deepens, I can’t help but wonder if they are someone from her past. This mystery definitely left me anxious for the next volume.
The Art: Carlos Gomez uses character expression and detailed drawings to convey energy and emotion. These are set off by the bold, brilliant color work of Jesus Aburtov. The result is a beautiful and engaging issue that perfectly captures the mood of the story. I am also impressed with the conscious way people of color are portrayed. From facial features to a variety of hair types, the purposeful representation is outstanding and much appreciated.
