Fans of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Fox X-Men universe were intrigued and excited to hear that Rosario Dawson, who plays the Fifth Defender Claire Temple on ALL of the Netflix Marvel shows, would be taking on another superhero role. This time with powers. Unfortunately, it looks like that will not be the case, at least not yet.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story earlier today that actress Alice Braga would be stepping in to play the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes in the Josh Boone directed X-Men spinoff New Mutants. Boone co-wrote the script which will see a new crop of mutant superheroes learning to use their powers while being held in a secret facility. It’s unclear how Reyes will feature, but she is a medical doctor and reluctant her who is really good at hiding her abilities from others in the comic.
No news has been released so far as to the reason or reasons Dawson left the project, but most of the news only had her “in negotiations” for the part. So it’s possible both parties couldn’t reach an agreement and that’s it.
The script itself is said to be more of a horror-thriller as the young mutants must escape from the facility while also dealing with a supernatural threat. Other confirmed members of the cast include Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things).
Alice Braga is known for her roles in films like I am Legend, Predators and Elysium. She is currently starring in the second season of the USA series Queen of the South.
New Mutants is expected to be released April 13, 2018.
