The Rundown: Superman and his team take on Mongul while the United Planets waits in the wings.
The council of the United Planets meets to discuss the biggest issue facing the galaxy, the invasion of Warworld by Superman and his team. As the members of the council try to decide how best to aid Superman in his endeavor, one member is opposed to the idea for reasons he will not reveal. At the same time, Superman and his team find the new Mongul on the throne to be more prepared than his predecessors. A mistake that will cost them dearly.
As the team continues to get attacked, Superman attempts to stop Mongul once and for all. Unfortunately, the despot was ready for them and when one of them falls, Mongul takes the opportunity to deliver a devastating blow to the man of steel. One that will cause the members of the United Planets to face their own choices while one of them savors the tragic outcome.
The Story: This is definitely a dark turn of events and it plays out exceedingly well in relation to the arc. Johnson delivers a great blend of action, tragedy and political intrigue in this issue. The story is compelling and has a great sense of pacing. I am excited to see where this story goes next and how the plot evolves, especially the moments with the United Planets and the impact this event will have on other characters.
The Art: Mendonca delivers some blistering art throughout the issue. The art is vibrant, violent and gorgeously detailed and delivers on the dramatic tone of the story.
