The Rundown: In the aftermath of the battle of Metropolis, it’s time for answers about the newest arrival to Clark’s world.
Clark brings Conner to the Fortress of Solitude in order to get answers to why everyone can remember him, but he can’t. After getting Conner to recount his story, Clark enlists the help of the smartest people he knows. People who can help them both find answers. At the same time, an unexpected reunion will bring everyone in Clark’s life to where it began for the man of steel and a moment that will bring peace to the former Superboy.
Meanwhile, with the revelation that the Daily Planet is owned by a crime boss, Perry is more determined than ever to win back the people of the city. While Leone and Robinson plan their next move, Lois and Jimmy locate Leone’s home and go in looking for clues. Unfortunately, they are going to find more than they bargained for.
The Story: Bendis makes this story a personal one and that is what makes it work. Taking the time to dig into Conner’s presence is needed and having it be Superman doing it enhances the story in some interesting and entertaining ways. The surprise appearance and the journey to Smallville are also great moments that speak to the enduring legacy of the character and his world. The Leone part of the story was fine because it stayed in its own lane and didn’t take away from Clark’s story.
The Art: John Romita Jr does some fine work in this issue. With the absence of action, Romita Jr is given the opportunity to focus on the characters, which is where his art shines.
