The Rundown: A new hero makes her way to Metropolis looking for help from the man of steel as Red Cloud shows Superman what she’s gotten from Luthor.
Naomi makes a splash (literally) on the streets of Metropolis as her new powers grab the attention of Superman. The Man of Steel takes the young woman to the Hall of Justice so that he, Ray Palmer and Batman can test her powers and listen to her story. All three heroes believe her and she seems to connect with both Batman and Superman before Clark is called away to deal with an issue regarding Leviathan.
When he finds Rose in the clutches of Red Cloud, the villain reveals that she has been given an upgrade by Lex Luthor. An upgrade that might be the end of the hero.
The Story: Brian Michael Bendis does some great work in this issue. The introduction of Naomi into this story is well executed. Her story touches on the characters in a way that is endearing without feeling exploitative. I like the way Batman is brought in to the story and how “matter of fact” he is about everything happening. It’s the perfect subtle characterization that elevates his presence in the story. It’s going to be interesting to see where Naomi factors into this story going forward.
The Art: Kudranski pulls off some incredible art in this issue and utilizes every panel to elevate and enhance the story. The beginning sequence from Naomi’s point of view is inspired in its execution.
