The Rundown: Sonny interacts with his new community and his backstory is revealed.
Hemlock Valley, BC. Six months have passed since Sonny and his companion reached a safehouse and he has now settled into what appears to be a survivalist camp. Sonny has several pointed conversations with Jim regarding a personal matter that include an explanation of his vigilantism. Later, his relationship with Xavier is explored. Finally, something unexpected occurs.
The Story: Remender continues his compelling and heartbreaking narrative surrounding the protagonist, Sonny. The world building is well done, as are the introduction of several relationship dynamics. I especially like how Sonny’s deepest feelings toward the people and situations he is involved with are expressed visually. This is a quiet man in both thought and elocution. He experiences life through emotion, and that sense of feeling is what ultimately drive his actions throughout the tale. The cliff hanger ending was also well conceived and I am excited to find out what happens next.
The Art: A significant portion of this story is told only through the artwork. And the attention to detail, including character expression and form, does much to replace the missing dialogue. I found the illustration to be both meaningful and transportive.
