The Rundown: People gather to remember the Man of Steel as other heroes investigate his disappearance.
A young woman makes the trek to Smallville, the home of Superman, to join a group of people reminiscing about their encounters with the man and speculate about what happened to him. As they gather to discuss the fate of the Man of Steel, the woman listens to all of the outlandish theories and wonders if anyone who is speaking really knew Superman and what he stood for at all. As the theories get more and more strange, her annoyance is apparent.
At the same time, a new battle is set to begin on War World and Mongol’s champions are set to face off against a new challenger. Other heroes investigating War World find strange and unusual things happening on the planet as well as clues to where Superman might be. Some heroes will find information while others will find new and dangerous threats.
The Story: The first story in this issue is really interesting. Johnson really nails the growing and evolving mythology of Superman after revealing his identity to the world. The dialogue works well and the journey to the end of the story is worth reading. The story is too short considering the scope of the narrative and the rest of the stories are weaker because of it. I was expecting more from this issue and was disappointed that so much of the issue was taken up by side stories that felt disconnected.
The Art: Mikel Janin delivers some great art throughout the issue. With the emphasis on character, the art does a great job of bringing depth and detail to those characters.
